Digital Literacy

Online Course

With more work than ever before happening online, possessing the skills and tools to work on digital platforms is no longer only an advantage but has become vitally important.

At Pearson, we recognise the importance of acquiring the digital skills students need to flourish in South Africa.

Our Digital Literacy Citizenship course is an online, modular and nonlinear programme for South African students who need to build their 21st-century digital literacy skills.

The 21st century digital citizen understands the consequences of his or her online actions and can confidently and effectively navigate the ever-increasing vast online world.

In completing this course, students will learn what it means to CREATE digital content, COMMUNICATE and COLLABORATE online, USE digital technology safely and effectively, BEHAVE appropriately, competently EVALUATE online activity and SEARCH the internet efficiently.

We refer to this as the CUBES framework. There is also a short introductory CUBE about the concept of digital citizenship and digital literacy.

Digital Literacy

In addition, Exploring and Experimenting is treated as a golden thread and runs through all seven CUBES, while legal and ethical issues are also included in all CUBES.

Content Framework

Each CUBE has content that sits in three levels ofability and each level has three to four topics.

The levels are staggered as follows:

Beginner:

For those who struggle with technology in general.

Everyday:

For those who are used to some technology but need to boost their confidence and awareness.

Savvy:

For those who are comfortable withtechnology but still need to improve their awareness of many of the behavioural, ethical or legal aspects of what they do.

Timing

  • Each CUBE level will take approximately 5 hours to complete.
  • Each CUBE in total will take approximately 15 hours to complete.
  • The whole course will take approximately 100 hours to complete.

Please note that the completion time is an estimate. How the users experience the content, as well as how long it takes in practice might differ from user to user.

Methodology

The eLearning course is hosted on a Pearson platform and includes:

  • pre-assessments
  • content presentation
  • practical and interactive activities

The training model is based on the ‘Tell, Show, Do’ approach which breaks away from the traditional lecture-based learning.
